Spring has officially arrived, and although we are ready for the nice weather, most of us are not ready for the storms and flooding.

Instead of letting the storm and flood damage take over your  home, be proactive! Prepare ahead of time for stormy weather to strike! Consider the following "Tips" for your Spring Storm Preparedness Plan:

  • Check for leaks in your home ahead of time; on your own BEFORE finding them during a storm! Take matters into your own hands! Use your garden hose on the light spray setting to test any suspicious areas around the perimeter of your home that may have caused issues in the past. This will help you determine where potential leaks may be happen.
  • Roof flashing is installed below the first course of roofing material. Be sure the flow of water is directed away from openings! This will not only keep water from entering your home, but will also protect the interior walls from deteriorating. It’s always a good idea to have your roof professionally inspected annually to check for potential damage.
  • Make sure to keep your gutters free of debris. Take this important step to eliminate the possibility of a constant flow of water down the exterior of your home during a storm. Cluttered gutters can cause water to leak into your home.
  • Basements; because they are located at the very bottom of your home are the most common areas to flood during a storm. A sump pump is recommended to protect your assets! If you have a sump pump already, make sure to check for any damage or signs of failure. (Irreplaceable items, if stored in your basement should be placed on high shelving or, better yet, on an altogether different level of your home in preparation of unexpected weather events).
  • Lastly, compare  costs of readiness vs risk of loss. Many people hold off  initiating their Storm Preparedness Plan due to the cost involved. This IS NOT suggested! Protecting your property is well worth the financial investment AND the peace of mind!
